About Nanaimo
We
encourage visitors to take advantage of Nanaimo's warm hospitality.
Our renowned picturesque waterfront promenade passes right
outside our front gate. Its highlights include Swy-a-Lana
Lagoon with its excellent children's playground, the Lighthouse
Bistro Pub, and the Pioneer Plaza shopping arcade. The historic
Bastion (last genuine Hudson's Bay Company trading post in
existence) stands above the Plaza. The Port Theatre, the Nanaimo
& District Museum, the Old City Quarter and numerous quality
restaurants are all within easy walking distance of the Marina.
In
the summer, a busy and colorful farmer's market enlivens Pioneer
Plaza on Friday mornings. Live entertainment, organic produce,
handicrafts and flowers are among the fares for sale. The
noon firing of the HBC Bastion's antique cannon, by costumed
staff, is definitely worth waiting around for. You can pick
up the "catch of the day" from the government dock
and then visit the Port Place Mall where a liquor store, post
office, hair salon, pharmacy, bank and grocery store can be
found.
For
the golfer, several challenging golf courses highlight our
city. Local world class scuba diving attractions like the
HMCS Saskatchewan, the HMCS Cape Breton, the Rivtow Lion,
Dodds Narrows, and Gabriola Passage are all close by.
